tapirback.com is three things: The web site of The Tapir Preservation Fund (TPF), the online gift shop that supports TPF, and Sheryl Todd's personal web site.

When I created my web space in 1996, I bought a domain and called it "tapirback.com." The word was a pun made of two things I loved - tapirs and books ("paperback"). I put a few pictures and stories online about my experience raising tapirs, and I called that part of my site "The Tapir Gallery." Online I met tapir fans who wanted to contribute to saving these endangered animals, and I met people in the field doing the actual work of tapir conservation. In 1998 I founded The Tapir Preservation Fund to help bring these two elements together. I hadn't thought of starting a new web site for TPF, I simply expanded The Tapir Gallery as TPF's fledgling home on the web. If you want, you can read more about the history of The Tapir Gallery and its unusual store. The main focus of the site remains TAPIRS. But tapirback, the host, is also my personal site. The links below lead to tapir blogs and groups as well as into the corridors of my own gallery. Thank you for visiting.

A treasure trove of special gifts that save endangered species

Tapir and Friends Wildlife World is the primary fundraising program of the Tapir Preservation Fund, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization founded by Sheryl Todd for the conservation of the four endangered species of tapir (pictured below). These little-known "living fossils" are - surprisingly - related to the horse and the rhinoceros.

Only after the last tree has been cut down,
only after the last river has been poisoned,
