In the 1980s, I came into possession of over 1,000 letters and documents that had been saved by my ancestors and their relatives from the 1800s and early 1900s. The letters came to me in an unusual way, and it became one of my personal objectives to bring this history to light. It also gives me great pleasure to share the letters with anyone interested. They tell about history - about big and small events - and they tell about people. There were more than a few writers, and I learned so much that I'd never heard in history books, novels, biographies, or documentaries. Since I first began to read this material, I have felt that these writers deserve an audience and we deserve to understand their bit of history the way they saw it unfolding.
The printed chapters were a beginning. The blog was an extension, but became slow and laborious. The question, as always, is how to organize this much material and make it accessible. I hope that migrating the material to my own web site will move the process along. The plan is to use lots of links to downloadable material. I've also begun making use of Ancestry.com, which builds on the Family Tree Maker genealogy software and connects the family trees to the world.
