Sea lion on the dock
Same sea lion, new pose
Sea lion scratching its head
I took these photos of sea lions in Astoria, Oregon, on October 20, 2007. Click on any picture for a larger view. The three above are all the same animal. The sea lions hang out here on one particular abandoned dock in the West Mooring Basin especially in the colder months, making plenty of grunting and barking noises and jockeying for positions on the dock. When I arrived here in 2001, the dock was attached to the pier, but it's been cut off now, and it belongs to the sea lions.

Here the sea lions are gathered on the dock weighing it down so the edge nearly submerges. I love watching the way they move. The enlargement of the center photo is especially big so you can get a good look at their faces in action. I took the three photos above on the same day as the top row, on the drizzly morning of October 20, 2007.
