Detail from Out of Control, November 6, 1990.
I don't know what I can say about this one. It's from a bigger collage. I make them a lot of times when I'm having strong feelings. Sometimes I know what the feelings are about, sometimes not. A lot of times I start out with a mind in confusion, and when I've gotten all that confused emotion out on paper, I'm feeling saner and more placid. This was obviously one of those times.
This one ran the risk of the colors at the left coming out like mud, but they didn't - quite. One way or another, a piece of art is always a risk. It's one of the things that makes artists different from a lot of people. You have to be willing to make something horrible, making something you want to rip up when you're done. And then sometimes out of that comes a gem. I don't consider this one a gem, but I consider that it does hang together and it evokes some kind of response. That's about all I ask. The writing at the bottom of the elephant picture says "Nepal." |
