PALISADE, COLORADO

The picture on the left was taken April 9, 1996, entering Palisade from the east on G Road. Mount Lincoln rises majestically above peach and apple blossoms. There are very few days each year to get good pictures of the blossoms. This day was about peak for these trees; a few days later the blossoms were nearly gone. The two photos on the right show the Bookcliffs (a rock formation that runs from Coloado through Utah) just above the town of Palisade, contrasted against a stormy April sky. (Photos by Sheryl Todd)

"The slopes . . . near Palisade, are sculptured in Mancos shale. The mesa is capped with Mesaverde Group sandstone. Both formations display the barren cliff-slope-cliff topography characteristic of the western plateau country." ~ Roadside Geology of Colorado

Here are three more views of the Bookcliffs and Palisade, all taken by Richard Moss on June 28, 1996. On the left is The Grande River Vineyards Winery, located just off I-70 at the Palisade exit, with Mount Garfield in the background. The two on the right were taken from the Highline Canal bank.

Slice O' Life Bakery, Palisade, Colorado   Slice O' Life Bakery in Palisade

Slice O' Life Bakery in Palisade may be the best bakery in the whole world. If you're in the area, or passing through on Interstate 70, take the Palisade exit and look for Main Street. The bakery is right near the corner of Third and Main -- which is the "big" intersection of downtown Palisade. It's housed in an old brick theatre building -- a genuine relic from the Old West. The bakery's phone number is (970) 464-0577. A local event they catered had the best hors d'oeuvres and snacks you can imagine (honest). If you planning to have an event catered, I suggest giving them a call. They didn't ask me to say that, but that's exactly what I'd do. Both bakery shots were taken with a Polaroid. The ragged line in the upstairs windows of the picture on the right is a reflection of the Bookcliffs just north of town. Just above the ice cream sign in the left photo is the downtown branch of Palisades National Bank. They also have a drive-up branch at the edge of Palisade.

Mount Garfield, near Palisade, Colorado   Palisade Park, Palisade Colorado

Richard Moss also took these two photos on June 28, 1996. Taken from the road leading up to Orchard Mesa, Mount Garfiled (left) always seems like a peaceful anchor on the horizon. On the right is Palisade Park. It's not very big, but it has the Veterans' Center, a skateboard jumping area (I don't know what you call them) and barbecue pits. When we have festivals in Palisade, they are usually held here. The Colorado River is only a block away, but it's not a recreational spot on the river.
