Hey, folks. This page is old, old, old! These are some of the first pix I took when I moved here in 2001. I have so many nice pictures of the town and area now, I hope to put them online soon. Meanwhile, there are A FEW on my personal blog.
On the left is the Astoria waterfront near the Maritime Museum. The picture in the center looks west toward the Astoria Bridge. Right, the lightship Columbia and a buoy from the 1970s along with the Maritime Musuem. All three pictures were taken from about the same location. The two on the right were taken from the dock to the right of the flowers and seagulls. All of the water you see in these pictures is the Columbia River. The ocean is a few miles beyond the Astoria Bridge.
Left, a pilot boat seen from the Baked Alaska restaurant (a gourmet restaurant built on pier 12). When a ship comes by in the river, the pilot boats leap into service, taking a pilot out to the ship. One set of pilots (bar pilots) take the ship in around the sand bars in near the mouth of the river, and another set (river pilots) take the ships upriver to Longview, Washington, or to Porland. The center shot pans just to the right of the pilot boat dock. The tall white building in the center photo is Astoria's remaining luxury hotel (an old one). The right-hand photo looks out from Bond Street onto the Columbia River and the old docks.
Left: A view of Astoria from the Crest Motel looking west toward the Astoria Bridge. Center: Also from the Crest Motel, this time looking north across the river to Washington. Right: A view of the motel gardens and nearby vegetation. One of the first things you notice about Oregon is how green it is and how the trees and plants grow wild.
