TAPIR TALK - 23 June 1997 - Vol. 1, No. 34
Contents of this issue
1. Tapir trap
2. Comments on field work
3. Ruben Nuņez' conservation work
4. Archives are up
Kevin,
Thanks for explaining about the lasso trap, etc. The one in the Natural
History Museum was definitely meant for tapirs, as they'd gone to the
trouble of sculpting a tapir for the display and labelled the trap "Tapir
Trap." Now that you mention it, there was a lasso around the log, but I
thought that was only a loop to hold it till it was sprung. It's sad that
the tapirs are gone from the area - I guess you're right, the traps were
effective.
To all of you who are doing field work and reporting on past work,
It's really great to be able to read about it. I hope it will lead to a lot
more information about these remarkable animals and that they can be
protected before it's too late for them, and before they also become only a
name on a map as they did in Kevin's area. It's fun to be able to hear field
reports as they're happening - I hope you'll all keep talking about your
work as you have the time.
In a few days I should have some data to post about field work on T.
pinchaque. At At this point, it is education rather than collaring and such.
Ruben Nuņez, who has worked with Craig Downer, is now working on his own in
Ecuador out of Baņos. Since February he's been able to present his
conservation program before 10,000 people, and "Mountain tapir clubs" are
being formed by Ruben and his fellow Ecuadoreans to help teach people why
it's important to preserve the tapirs. I'll have more details in a few days.
We're still looking for ways to raise a consistent $200 (US) per month for
this project, so any ideas will be appreciated.
Some funds were donated by Wildlife Preservation Trust International and the
Tapir Specialist Group of the IUCN/SSC for the past couple of months. We now
need to find a source of funding that can continue month to month. Upcoming
projects for Ruben are to be able to go further into the remote villages
where tapir poaching still continues and give presentations in these areas.
ARCHIVES: I've finally put up the archives for the past month of Tapir Talk.
They can be found on the page shown in my signature.
