just a note to Patricia-congratulations!! but...
Were you using Detomidine alone? if so, that is why the tapir did not go
down. We usually use Butorphanol/Xylazine or Butorphanol/Detomidine to
provide analgesia, and further relaxation. the most Detomidine will do on its
own is a "five point stance" where they will stand there quietly. There are
other combinations. The other thing to check is dosage and estimated size. My
husband, Carlos Foerster has been studying tapirs in Costa Rica for 3 years-i
do the veterinary work for him with the help and advise of a lot of folks
inthe states. we will be capturing 12 more this summer. we have used m-99 and
it;s great and now we use Butorphanol/Xylazine mostly for human safety
concerns and expense.
take care, sonia foerster
