Hi everybody!!!
Patricia from Brazil again. Where are you all? I didn't receive the Tapir
Talk Digest during the last days. What happened? Everybody disappeared?
Well, Joana is still doing fine. I hope that I already can say that I won't
have problems with the collar. I captured her exactly 2 months ago and she
keeps fine. It's such a relief, because I must admit that I was a little
bit afraid about the collar hurting her neck (!?). Last week we made a big
trail inside the area that she is using the most and I will start visiting
the area, collecting faeces and looking for foraging signals tomorrow. It
will be as exciting as the triangulations.
Some time ago the group was discussing almost every day about Jaguars
eating Tapirs. Last week I found a big Tapir female dead close to the
river. The responsible was a Jaguar for sure. Her bones, mainly the ribs
where all exposed and clearly broken. Also, we found lots of Jaguar tracks
around the dead tapir. I took lots of pictures. I can send it if someone
will be interested. And in the same night, one of the rangers of the Park
who was working during the night saw a Black Jaguar chasing two Tapirs. An
adult (probably a female) and a juvenile. He told me that the Jaguar just
gave up when both the Tapirs reached the river in the front of the lodging
house. He was very impressed.
Hei...nobody sent me any ideas about fund raising and data collection
methodologies.
I'm still waiting OK !!!???!!!
Best wishes
Patricia and Joana
