TAPIR NOTICES:

The following article is soon to be published in the "Journal of Ecology" by
Blackwell Science of Oxford, England:

Fragoso, J. Tapir generated seed shadows - scale dependent patchiness in the
Amazon rain forest.

The Blackwell Science web site publishes contents pages of past and upcoming
issues: http://www.open.ac.uk/OU/Academic/Biology/J_Ecol/JEmenu.htm

-----------------------------------

If you get an advertising mailer from National Geographic Society, don't
toss it out, at least not until you've found the baby tapir! It's a mailer
for Holiday Cards, and their "World of Hope" design has a "striped
watermelon" amongst bear, lion, birds, giraffe, hippo, bison and more. You
don't have to be a member of the National Geographic Society to order. Their
toll-free number is: 1-800-324-9692. (They did not pay me to say this :)
The message inside says, "Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All Creatures!" You
can get your name printed on the cards.

-----------------------------------

Is anyone willing to make an estimate, or even hazard an educated guess
about the number of wild founders it would take to create a healty gene pool
for a tapir captive breeding program? I am looking for a number that can be
used in the IUCN TSG newsletter *only* as a comparison to the number of
mountain tapirs that remain in captivity. I have heard that with tigers the
number may be about 26 breeding pair.

-----------------------------------

I have been informed by Ignacio March Mifsut that a reprint of his article
on Baird's tapirs in Mexico can be found online at this address:

http://www.ecosur.mx/tapir/index.htm

The paper is in Spanish with an English-language summary. There is a photo
by Eduardo Naranjo.

-----------------------------------

A REQUEST: Ruben Nuņez is working in Ecuador, giving slide talks on mountain
tapir and habitat conservation. He is doing a beautiful job, but feels
isolated from other tapir/ecology professionals. He does not have Internet
access.

If you can communicate with him in Spanish and are willing to do so by paper
mail, please e-mail me for his paper mail address.

Ruben's Master's work is in agronomy and in the past he has had some
training in capturing, collaring and data collection in re: mountain tapirs,
having accompanied Craig Downer on a capture expedition. Ruben is interested
in learning about the many aspects of conservation work. He is becoming a
major asset to his country in terms of environmental protection and
education. Copies of articles and papers would also be appreciated.

Sheryl: With regard to census of tapirs in S. American countries. I
would suggest for Paraguay that you contact the CITES rep for Paraguay,
Lucy Aquino...or Isabel Gammara de Fox who is the vertebrate zoologist at
the Paraguay Natural History Museum. If anyone can give you these data
for Paraguay it will be these two sources (Note: Nora Nereis a mammalogist
with extensive knowledge of paraguayan fauna is also in the CITES office and
could possibly have that information as well but since she and Lucy work very
closely, your request will get to both).

	Lucy's email is: laquino-cites@sce.cnc.una.py
Mamila Fox can be reached at: vertebrate@mnhnp.una.py
