Applications Now Being Accepted

 for the

Pittsburgh Zoo Conservation Fund

The Pittsburgh Zoo, as part of its continuing commitment to
conservation, announces the continuation of the Pittsburgh Zoo
Conservation Fund, dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and wild
habitat. Annual awards of from $1,000 to $3,000 will be made. A wide
variety of projects will be considered, but field studies and
cross-disciplinary approaches to conservation are especially encouraged.
Visitor surveys, travel and training (except to bring foreign
researchers or field workers to meetings) and seed money for technique
development are not appropriate for this fund.

The application deadline for this year is October 1. Email submissions
are welcome. Award notification will be on or before December 1.
Recipients must submit a progress report one year after the awarding of
funds.

Tapir Bait.
Have you tried using dried banana chips? Available in Costa Rica are
banana chips made from green plantains. Light and easy to pack.
Probably would not be hard to contract a campesino to do this for a
low but reasonable cost.

We were just wondering if the banana flavoring and honey was used on wild or
captive tapirs. The reason we have stayed away from the abstracts we've
encountered is because we didn't think the tapirs would smell them from a
good distance away the way they smell ripe bananas. What type of banana
flavoring is it?-cooking flavoring? Could you tell me the brand name? Thanks
a ton. Charles and Sonia
