Dear tapir friends
Guess what? Mark Myers has just called from the field and informed us that
Roberta, one of our collared females has a brand new offspring!!!!! She has
been seen with a 25 lb watermelon-Mark has narrowed his birthday to within a
week when she started acting peculiar, left her usual range, traveled to the
head waters of the Tamandua Creek and disappeared for one week-when she
emerged she had this offspring. Luckily, the film crew of Wild Things were
down there doing a special on the tapirs and actually got footage of the
watermelon and Roberta! We couldn't be more excited. The show will air in
November-I will pass on the exact date when I know it.
This means Roberta was 11 months pregnant when she was captured-we knew she
was big (>300 kg)but never had any suspicion of pregnancy. Remember, Roberta
was the one tapir that had such a poor induction the first time darted that
the capture was ended early. Her second capture went smooth but she did
require a higher dose and stood up before we were completely done and again
had to be reversed early. Mark will keep a log on its growth by visual
observations. He reports that Roberta, who usually is very calm, is now very
skittish, and will display stomping behavior if surprised which she had never
done before.
On another note, the other female with an offspring (a capture is planned) is
seen traveling wiht her offspring during the day; however, she leaves the
calf behind at night and visits the bait stations alone.....It will be
interesting to know when this offspring will start traveling with the mother
full time.
more news as we get them,
