Hi Sheryl
The female Tapir is coming from a zoo, not sure which one yet, but as soon
as I do I'll let you know.
I'd really like this introduction of the new to the old Tapir to be
successful and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for doing this.
Also, if there are any suggestions to try to encourage them to breed eg.
any changes to the exhibit or husbandry routine that triggered off mating.
There is also something else I'm interested in and that is the survey
results of the captive diets of Tapirs in zoo's in the UK.
We are currently reviewing Berani's (our male tapir) diet. Maybe people
in the group have some interesting suggestions on this subject, it would be
good to have as much variation as possible.
Regards,
Claudia

Hi Sheryl: I received the following letter and was hoping that
you could add it to Tapir Talk:
From Chantal Routhier, Animal Curator
Biodome de Montreal
4777 avenue Pierre-De Coubertin
Montreal Quebec H1V 1B3
514-868-3065
To Whom It May Concern:
We are looking for possibilities of introducing Brazilian tapir,
Tapirus terrestris, in our large exhibit of 2288 sq. ft.
including a big pool of 840 sq. ft.
Inside that exhibit, we have natural plants typical of the South
American Rainforest. We recreate as close as possible the
natural habitat of the Amazonian basin.
Knowing that tapir is a browser and grazer, we are concerned
about the degradation of the vegetation of that habitat. Are you
aware of any plants that they won't touch or of any physical
barrier other than "frost" mesh and electric fence that will keep
them away from the plants?
It is known that, in the wild, this tapir is solitry. Wht about
in captivity? Do you have to keep one of the pair isolated all
the time, except during breeding season?
Is it possible to mix that species with capybaras or other type
of animals? Thank you in advance for your precious information.
(There was no e-mail address)
Hope someone with experience with T. terrestris in captive
situation can advise. Thanks for posting this! Sharon.
