Sheryl,

Please share this with the "group".

Regarding what species may be safely mixed with Asian tapirs in zoological
settings, I have seen them mixed with all manner of geographically related and
unrelated species.

I would certainly recommend Asian cervids for openers, but where
zoographical correctness was not a big issue, I have also seen them kept
with giraffes, giant anteaters, and capybaras. In my mind, they are little
different than a large antelope and will mix readily with most other herbivores.

Hello Tracy and all,

The most comprehensive study I've seen on tapir behavior is that done by
Wolfgang von Richter. It was published in German:

von Richter, W. 1966. Untersuchungen uber angeborene
verhaltensweisen des Schabrackentapirs (Tapirus indicus) und des
Flachlandtapirs (Tapirus terrestris). Zoologische Beitraege, 12:67-159.

The title in English would be something like: "Investigations of the innate
behavioral traits of the lowland tapir and the saddleback tapir."

I do not have the original German, but many years ago when I was with the
Tapir Research Institute, we hired a student to make an English translation
so we could read it. I lost the original German, and have tried in
vain to find the author. I finally saw the citation in the article on T.
terrestris by Padilla and Dowler. If someone could send me the contact
information for Zoologische Beitraege (or I'll get the info. from the
library when I'm through having bronchitis), I'll see what I can do about
making the English language version available. It's a detailed and
interesting study.

In re tapirs and capybaras:

Sontag WA. 1974. Beobachtungen an gemeinsam gehaltenen Flachlandtapiren
(Tapirus terrestris) und Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) im
Zurcher Zoo [Observation of lowland tapirs and capybara kept together
in the Zurich Zoo]. Der Zoologische Garten, 44(5):317-323.

I don't know if there is an English translation of this and I do not,
unfortunately, read German.

Sheryl
