Hi Janet,
I hope you've had some help from the list on the mixed exhibit question. I
thought I should pass along one piece of information that was given on a
survey years ago, because the condition could have been fatal for the tapir.
At least one tapir in an exhibit with giant anteaters developed rectal
prolapse, and the reason given was, "Giant anteaters probing rectum with
snout." I have no idea if this is common or was an extremely unusual case.
In any event, it seems to have been ongoing. I wish I could tell you the
name of the zoo so you could contact them, but my original records were
lost. I guess this interaction would be something to watch out for, though.
TAPIR PRESERVATION FUND UPDATE: On December 1, we finally filed our
application with the IRS for 501 (c) 3 nonprofit status, and hope to hear
something within a few months. Many, *many* thanks to Kate Wilson for her
help answering one simple question from the IRS. For those of you who have
not filled out an application of this nature, they have a "killer question"
that goes like this:
"Provide a detailed narrative description of all the activities of the
organization - past, present, and planned. Do not merely refer to or repeat
the language in the oganizational document. List each activity separately in
the order of importance based on the relative time and other resources
devoted to the activity. Indicate the percentage of time for each activity.
Each description should include, as a minimum, the following: (a) a detailed
description of the activity including its purpose and how each activity
furthers your exempt purpose; (b) when the activity was or will be
initiated; and (c) where and by whom the activity will be conducted."
Notice they included the word "planned." By the time we were done, we had a
42-page document defining and clarifying every aspect of the TPF we could
think of, and had laid the groundwork for the future of TPF and for (shorter
than 42 page) information sheets.
It will take several months before the TPF is notified of Federal nonprofit
status. Should we get it, one main thing it will allow us to do is to raise
major funding that can then be used in various aspects of tapir research and
conservation. Much of it will be given as grants to those needing money to
continue field work and other tapir projects. I don't expect the fundraising
to be easy or quick, but we will be persistent, and I'll keep the list
posted about nonprofit status, and of course any grant money that will be
available.
