Dear Tapir Friends
Once again, we are preparing to leave for Costa Rica. We wil arrive in San
Jose on the 31st of December and travel to our research area on January
5th.The goal this time is to capture and radiocollar and additional eight
Baird's tapirs. We will be joined by several people who have supported us
through the years and who will volunteer their time and expertise to help us.
We will report to you upon our return. Wish us luck! Charles and Sonia
Foerster.

Re: the discussion of tapir parts in traditional medicine, Sharon Matola
reports: "As
far as I know, T. bairdii has never been considered for medicinal uses," but
she wonders if anyone else has further information. She says not much is
known about the indigenous people on the eastern coast of Nicaragua, for
instance, and there is good tapir habitat there.
We have had some good news regarding funds for the Ruben Nuņez mountain
tapir project in Ecuador, and we'll keep you informed. I don't remember if
I've mentioned this, but his proposal (minus budget) is online at this URL:
http://www.tapirback.com/tapirgal/proposal/nunez01.htm
If you have a proposal you would like to see online, please contact me. I
think it's a good vehicle, not only for attracting possible grantors, but
also to gain the attention of the public. Since a proposal describes a
project, it gives people a way to learn more about what you are doing. Many
visitors to The Tapir Gallery enjoy reading in depth about work with the tapirs.
Holiday greetings to all of you!
