WELCOME TO TAPIR TALK!

The Tapir Talk e-mail list begins today with 61 members. I'm pleased to say
that a wide variety of animal- and conservation-related professions are
included, representing several countries around the world on several
continents and islands. This should give us the opportunity for a truly
global look at issues involving and affecting tapirs. Thank you all for
signing up!

I encourage anyone who wishes, to make an introduction.

TO POST TO THE GROUP: Simply send a return e-mail to my address:

       tapir@tapirback.com

Put the words, "Tapir Talk" in the subject line, and I'll include your
letter in the next post to the group.

A REQUEST FROM BRAZIL

I received a letter the other day from a zoo director in Brazil asking
whether I knew something about Tapirus terrestris kept in zoos in that
country. I don't. Does anyone know if there is a listing of this species in
zoos in Brazil and/or other South American countries? Do any of the
Studbooks on T. terrestris include South American countries? If not, are
there any planned?

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE TRANSLATION

One of the newest pages in The Tapir Gallery is an English-language
translation of the paper by J. Goudot (1843) on the mountain tapir: "Recent
observations on the Tapir Pinchaque." It was first published as "Nouvelles
observations sur le Tapir Pinchaque," Comptes Rendus, Paris 1843, vol. xvi,
pp 331-334.
