Reading this, it occurred to me that it will be really neat to have the
page translated into Spanish since many South American people will be
visiting the site and many of them know little or no English.

I can offer my help, although it will be limited to my spare time.

Regarding the query from Brazil. As you may be aware there is a Brazialian
Faunal Interest Group within the AZA - you can call AZA directly and get
the name of the coordinator. The number is 301-907-7777. The coordinator, I
believe is out of the Houston Zoo. They should be able to gather
information for you. The other group is ZCOG, Zoo Conservation Outreach
Group out of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas their number is
817/897-2020. They work with many Latin American zoos.

Good luck.

There are three Tapir terrestris specimens in the Asuncion Zoo, Asuncion,
Paragauy. One is a young animal, born in mid to late 1996. Not aware of
what might be in Brazilian Zoos but you might want to contact Natasha
Shischakin at the Houston Zoo (Shischak@aol.com) Natasha is chair of the
AZA Brazilian Fauna Interest Group and has contacts with ALPZA institutions
there as well as IBAMA (the Brazilian F&W group).

I don't know offhand about tapirs in Brazil, but I can look into it
tomorrow when I get to work. I'll let you know.
I guess I'll start off by introducing myself. My name is Jennifer and
I'm the Mammal Collection Manager at a small zoo in east texas. I
have not worked with tapirs, but thought that this list might prove
interesting. So, a big hello to everyone.

Greetings to all on the TapirTalk list, and congratulations to Tapirback
for putting it together. I've watched the Tapir Gallery grow with
excitement and appreciation, and I know this will be a valuable list for
everyone interested in, and involved with, the preservation of the species
and its habitat.

I would like to encourage everyone on the list to contact their local media
and inform them both of the website and of this list. Media coverage on the
plight of tapirs is shameful - and drumming up coverage in the media is an
important method for increasing public awareness and action. This is
something that all of us can do to make a difference.

In particular, US subscribers might want to contact their local PBS and NPR
affiliates, or visit PBS and NPR online to express their desire for
documentaries and news stories about tapirs.

PBS (Public Broadcating Service): http://www.pbs.org
NPR (National Public Radio): http://www.npr.org

As always, this is not a call for flaming or letter bombing - just a gentle
nudge that will help the media learn about a subject worthy of increased
coverage.

According to the ISIS Specimen Reference CD-ROM dated 31 Dec. 96, the only
South American institution that has registered Tapirus terrestris specimen
with ISIS is CALI : Fundacion Zoologica de Cali, Cali, Colombia. This
reference indicates that 3.2 T.terrestris were reported to be held at
Fundacion Zoologica de Cali as of the end of last year.

This is not to say, of course, that other South American institutions are
not holding this species, but that these are the only specimen registered
with ISIS.

Hope this information is helpful.

Greetings from New Orleans and the Zoo Conservation Outreach Group (ZCOG),

A web-site exists which lists complete animal holdings for several
Brazilian zoos. I don'thave the exact internet address (sorry, I'll
try a search later in the afternoon...and then post the address) but
it can be accessed by using the search parameters "brazil" and "zoos."
I believe the list was compiled by a female researcher at U. Cal.
Davis. Information on tapir holdings in Brazilian zoos can be located
in these listings.

Hope this is helpful.

	Dear Sheryl

I would appreciate to be a member of the Tapir Group.
I am studing the diet, habitat use and estimating Tapir density in the
Brazilian cerrado of the Brasilia National Park. I have just began my
research, so I do not have good data to discuss about the role of T.
terrestris in the cerrado.
I would like to know if the Tapir group has any kind of
financial support to research concerned with the aims of my master thesis
project.

		About "A REQUEST FROM BRASIL"

The Brasilia Zoo has 3 T. terrestris in captive. Recently the
female give birth to one young. He is quite beatiful and is fine. All
the the tapirs of Brasilia Zoo are docile. I am testing the radio colars
that I am going to use in my project in the Tapirs of the Brasilia Zoo.
Today we captured a Tapir that was invading an area nearby
Brasilia National Park to eat vegetables. This animal will be radio
collared. I hope that soon we will have informations about home hange and
activity of T. terrestris in the cerrado.
