Re: Activities of the International Nature Conservancy...I am familiar
with one activity by this organization in S. America....a major
parcel of a parque in N.E. Paraguay -"Mbaracayu"- was purchased by the
Nature Conservancy International and turned over the Fudacion Moises
Bertoni for administration and operation. The Fundacion is directed by
Ing. Raul Gauto and is headquartered in Asuncion, Paraguay. I can give
more specific contact information if anyone wishes it...e-mail me at:

Subject: Tapir Talk: a shrew question
Dear Tapirologists,
First, I would like to congratulate Sheryl Todd for finally having created
'Tapir Talk' and want to express my respect for all the tedious work she is
doing by collecting & organizing data and putting scientists in contact
with one another.
I am not a tapir specialist, my concern is rather with shrews. But there
may be a common ground provided by Mr. Baird.
It may not be a big problem, but I am wondering about the scientific name
of the Baird's Shrew and other mammal species named after Mr. Baird, such
as Tapirus bairdii.
In the current official list of mammal species (ie, Mammal Species of the
World, ed. by D.E. Wilson & D.M.A. Reeder, Smithsonian Inst. Press.,
Washington, 1993), among others, the Baird's Shrew and the Baird's Tapir
are referred to as Sorex (Tapirus) bairdii (spelling with double 'ii').
My Latin tells me that the genitive of a latinized name (that would be:
Bairdus) should be bairdi (like crawfordi, merriami, lyelli). Only if the
ending already has an 'i' or the name ends with '-ius' (like in an Italian
or Japanese name eg, Imaizumi), it would be 'imaizumii' etc...Am I wrong?
This, my opinion, is supported by Dr. L. Alexander, whose message to me I
quote below:
_________________
'Sorex bairdi should be spelled with only one "i". The original description in
1895 (Merriam) included only one "i"; I returned bairdii to its original
and correct spelling in my paper. The common name is Baird's shrew.' Lois
Alexander

Hello tapir group:

>Is there an FAQ or web document that newbies should know about?
Hi Mike, The FAQ will be developed from questions people ask, so if you have
any (or if anyone else has questions or suggestions for a FAQ), please send
them to me. I've started a page for Tapir Talk info, archives, FAQ and
registration, here:

>protection by governmental officials, outsiders, or indigenous people?
I have second-hand information that in Ecuador the government has *possibly*
turned a corner on this one. They have in the past been willing to create
reserves and parks, but have not had the resources to patrol them, so
poaching, farming, etc. continue at a high rate. It appears there may be
some recent progress here.
In Venezuela, conditions seem to be going from bad to worse. I have a very
interesting letter just received from Mary L. Goodwin, Activism Committee,
Sociedad Conservacionista Audubon de Venezuela (sent via Elise Jacobs at
Global Response in the U.S.). I'll find out if it's OK to post. If not, I'll
paraphrase. In short, the Venezuelan government is NOT environment-friendly.
I'll be interested in hearing more on this topic.

>CAPTIVE TAPIRS IN BRAZILIAN ZOOS
Thank you very much for this. Which zoos are listed here for 1995?
Leo Salas wrote:

Leo, I'm making a page for the Tapir Gallery that will list number, sex and
species kept - by zoo. It's barely started. ISIS has a page they update
regularly, but it's only for animals in ISIS institutions. (A massive
undertaking, as it includes a lot more than tapirs :) Thanks for the info.
Can someone give me the general location of Parque Natural Chico Mendes in
Brazil? I have a detailed map, but no index, and I'm not finding it. There's
a wonderful photo of a juvenile T. terrestris here (in that park):
http://future.com.br/parques/pnatural/animais/anta/anta.htm
It has the very light-colored face sometimes seen. I'm curious about what
regions produce different physical characteristics of this species (assuming
it's regional, or partly regional).
Sheryl
