If you are searching for in-situ projects and programsin Venezuela you may
want to consider contacting Lya Cardenas (in-country coordinator in
Venezuela for The Nature Conservancy_ (011-582-285-5121). Good luck.

RE: FOSSIL DISTRIBUTION:
just a short addition to the distribution and evolution of the early Tapirs:
The oldest Tapirs (Isectolophidae) are known from the Eocene of North
America and Asia (without the long nose! which is - as far as I know - first
developed in Protapirus/Oligocene of Europe). In the Oligocene or Miocene a
splitting in the two lineages of true Tapirs (America and Asia) happens and
They reached South America in the Pleistocene across the Mid-American land
ridge which developed during the beginning Quarternary.
By the way, in some parts of the world the tapirs are even used for stratigraphic correlation in Quarternary deposits.
