Congratulations to Sheryl Todd for getting Tapir Talk started, it
is inspiring to see the degree of interest out there for these
animals. I am the Chairperson for the Tapir Specialist
Group/IUCN and before Sheryl came along, communications were
slim. We are hoping that serious interest can be garnered
targeting raising of funds to support important field work, or
foment some interest in field biologists to study aspects of
tapir biology. We need a greater public awareness about these
animals, more documentary coverage, greater visibility for all
four species. Sheryl and I are beginning to put together the
next TSG newsletter, and hope to have it available on-line, as
well. If you have a field project on-going, or know of someone
doing research, please share this information and we will see
that it gets in the upcoming issue of the TSG newsletter. Does
anyone have any information on T. bairdii in captivity anywhere
in Nicaragua? I struck out when I visited there three years ago.

Sharon Matola, Chairperson, TSG/SSC/IUCN

Hello Tapir People:

LORENA CALVO? Does anyone have current contact info. for Lorena? The last I
have is St. Louis (Feb. 1996), and it's outdated.

FOSSIL TAPIRS: Stefan, I'd be interested in knowing why tapirs are often
used as stratigraphic markers. Is it because they were so widely spread?
Slow, steady evolution, maybe?

FEEDING: I'm wondering how much hay and grain-based food is fed tapirs in
zoos of non-tropical countries as opposed to tropical countries. In Central
and South America and in Southern Asia, are more fruits fed? What specific
plant types are used for leaf matter in both tropical and non-tropical
countries?

Thank you.

Sheryl
