Dear Sheryl,

Tapirs are used as index fossils because they have some characteristics wich
make them very valuable for stratigraphic correlation: They are
geographically widespread, common (at least during the Tertiary and the
oldest Pleistocene) and they undergo a rapid evolution (fast speciation with
short ranges, comparable to that of the horses during the Tertiary or even
our own evolution) building a phylogenetic lineage.

FUNDRAISING FOR TAPIR PROJECTS: Until the Tapir Preservation Fund
gets it's Federal nonprofit status, we will probably not be able to make any more
major grants. However, I'm committed to using the Web site for raising what
we can. If you have a tapir project - conservation or research - that could
use smaller amounts of help, please see these two web pages for ideas:
http://www.tapirback.com/tapirgal/funds/counter.htm
http://www.tapirback.com/tapirgal/gifts.htm
The first one is self-explanatory. On the second (the gift shop) - note
especially the tapestries from Ecuador. In addition to tapestries with
tapirs on them, we've arranged to sell other tapestries (not online yet)
from the same source. As part of his funding proposal, Craig Downer arranged
to work with a Salasacan family of weavers to bring income to their proposed
cultural heritage center as well as his ongoing tapir project. There is a
market for "tapirabilia," and we're working on expanding it with print
advertising. If marketing of quality indigenous products, including
especially depictions of tapirs could help raise funds for your work, please
let me know.
TAPIR DIETS: Some info. has come in on captive tapir diets; I'll summarize
what I get, but so far there is nothing from Central or South American
countries.
Sheryl
