Hello Richard,
I'm not aware of any features about tapirs in the magazine and a quick
search of their site resulted in no info either
(http://www.nationalgeographic.com). I'm forwarding this to a friend who is
a long-time subscriber to the NGS to see if he knows of anything.
Your suggestion that we campaign for tapir coverage is very good and I'd
like to add my encouragement to everyone on this list to follow through.
Most mainstream media is too busy cranking out nonsense like "Hard Copy" -
we should encourage a broader world view. Writing to the sponsors of news
and nature programs may also help. They pay the bills after all.
Some good news: Those of you who watched PBS' "Spirits of the Jaguar" (a
three part mini-series from the "Nature" program) saw a wonderful (if
brief) piece of footage during the segment about Maya culture and history.
We were treated to some great underwater footage of a tapir feeding on
water grasses in the wild. I had no idea they were so graceful in the
water! Please visit PBS and write to producer George Page asking for more.

Call your local PBS station if you missed the series and ask them to
rebroadcast it, too.

I can find no email address, but will keep looking. This series is probably
the best hope for a national broadcast or documentary on the plight of
tapirs. Please write to express your interest in this subject.
