TAPIR TALK - 16 May 1997 - Vol. 1, No. 15

Contents of this issue:
    1. Armadillo and tapir movements (separate topics, sort of)

Hello tapir friends,

This started as an armadillo question on another list and turned into a
tapir question. Sandra Valtji from Greece (isn't the Internet great?) was
having a discussion with a friend from Texas. The Texas friend had noticed
armadillos moving into Arkansas from Texas (I'm sorry, I don't know the
exact locations, and I've lost the original letter). The Texas friend
thought global warming might be an issue and that the armadillos were
moving to a cooler spot. Sandra suggested it might be due to human
population dynamics. I mentioned that in some places tapirs seem to be
migrating to different areas to escape humans. She then asked:

>I would like to ask you this: A move of the tapir populations to colder
>climates or to less favourable regions in general, has it ever been
>observed in their effort to avoid the populated areas??

> Best wishes,
> Sandra.

So, the question is threefold:

1) Can anyone give specific data on tapirs relocating as in the question
above.
2) Any suggestions on whether global warming could account for any of this?
3) Maybe someone can answer the original *armadillo* question.

Sandra is now on the list, so replies can be posted here or to her directly.

Thanks.

Sheryl
