Young Malayan tapir at the Nuremburg Zoo

Baby Malayan tapir in the Nuremburg Zoo
Photo © Stefan Seitz 1996

This photo was sent to The Tapir Gallery by Stefan Seitz as a Happy Birthday present for the two-year anniversary of The Tapir Gallery (two years online March 15, 1998). This youngster was one of the tapirs observed by Stefan in his behavioral study. She is six weeks old in this photo, and lived at the Nuremberg Zoo until she grew up. She now (1998) lives at the zoo in Madrid, Spain. The white saddle began to appear between the ages of two and three weeks. Stefan first observed the baby when she was five weeks old. His study has just been published in German:

Seitz, Stefan. Tapire im Zoo - Bemerkungen zu Aktivitaeten, Sozialverhalten und interspezifischen Kontakten. [Tapirs in Zoos - remarks on activities, social behavior and interspecific interactions]. Der Zoologische Garten N.F. 1998; 68(1):17-38.

Tapirs are endangered species.
