This Baird's tapir was photographed in the Santa Barbara Zoo about 1990. Unfortunately the film sat undeveloped for a few years and the picture turned green. In any event, it clearly shows white bands between the hooves and the upper part of the toes. In 1951, L.S. Crandall noted whitish bands of skin above the hooves in the Mountain tapir. I don't remember the white being typical of all Baird's tapirs.
