This wood engraving of a Malayan tapir was on the printed version of the bibliography. It comes from a book called, Animals, 1419 Copyright-Free Illustrations of Mammals, Birds, Fish, Insects, etc., Dover Publications, Inc. 1979. p. 54.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ORIGINAL PRINT VERSION

Tapirs are a fascinating group of animals, but comparatively little has been published about them. We felt that it was important to bring the information that has been published together into one place. The compilation of scientific and popular citations about tapirs that follows is designed to provide a current, comprehensive reference to the state of knowledge about tapirs.

We have compiled the following list of references on tapirs from a variety of sources, and many individuals have participated in the process. We obtained most of the references by searches of computer databases including Wildlife Review, CAB abstracts, Medline, EMBase, BIOSIS, AGRICOLA, and Zoological Record. Douglas Armstrong from the Henry Doorly Zoo provided several of these searches. We gathered additional citations from several recent published reviews of tapirs including Barongi (1993), Lee (1993), Padilla (1994), and Ramsay (1993). I have included English translations for some non-English titles. Those who have provided translations include Werner Heuschele, Pat Morris, Tomaz Kugler, Alan Lieberman, and Philip Miller. Rick Barongi, chair of the tapir TAG, encouraged the development of this bibliography. The "Veterinary Bibliography for Rhinoceroses" compiled by Eric Miller in 1993 provided a model. The Zoological Society of San Diego funded this project through a 1995 Conservation and Research grant.

Once we identified each publication, we entered the citation into a computer bibliographic database program (Procite ver 2.2). The citations were formatted into the Vancouver punctuation style and printed into WordPerfect files in two parts. Part I was created to contain full citations listed alphabetically by author. Abstracts of reports were included where available. Part II was designed to contain an indexed list of citations that only included the author, title, and date. Part II was indexed using at least one biology and/or medical descriptor chosen for each citation. Both parts were printed to produce the bibliography that follows.

This bibliography is being supplied to the tapir TAG [Taxon Advisory Group], to veterinarians in North American institutions with captive tapirs, and to others interested in tapirs. Feel free to duplicate this bibliography for others that may have use for it. This document is also available on electronic media. I am interested in maintaining this bibliography as complete and current as possible. If you have access to new publications or ones that I have missed, please send them to me.
