A capybara in the
Santa Barbara Zoo,
Santa Barbara, California

Photo by Sheryl Todd, about 1990

The capybara is a South American rodent - the largest on earth. (Compare it with the size of the bar-headed goose!) This picture shows the front feet pretty well, including the four toes on its right front foot - unfortunately, it doesn't show the webbing between the toes. If you wonder what this capybara is doing in a Tapir Gallery, check the "Entire Engraving" link below. The big white spot on the photo is a flare on the lens caused by the evening sun.

Marco says, "That's one big rat!" :)
