Sea lions are members of the eared seals family. There are 7 species of sea lion and a total of 14 species of eared seals. These cold-water loving creatures are found on rocky and sandy beaches of coastal island and mainland shores all over the world. They are able to pivot their rear flippers out to the sides, giving them the abililty to walk and climb. Their streamlined body containes a thick layer of blubber and short, thick fur that ranges in color from tan to chocolate brown. It is the males' heavy, coarse mane that gives the animal it's name. The females are much smaller than the males, weighing only up to 250 pounds and averaging 6 feet long. The males can grow up to 9 feet long and weigh between 800 and 1,000 pounds. They can live up to 15 years in the wild and up to 35 years in captivity. The can dive down to 1,100 feet.
Please note! This small sea lion toy is made of solid plastic and does not actually float in water. We think he'd make a wonderful addition to your sea-life diorama or school project.
