This arctic seal is named for a rather weird inflatable "hood" on the head of the mature male. The males can also blow their nasal cavity out their nose, resembling a big red balloon! Hooded seals are generally solitary and live mainly in the North Atlantic. The mature hooded seal is a silvery color with black patches and a solid black face. The males can grow to 9 feet and weigh 900 pound; the females grow to about 7 feet and weigh about 670 pounds. Pups have very different coloring from their parents, slate blue on the back and pale gray underneath. At birth they are about 3 1/2 feet and weigh about 50 pounds. They are very large and well-developed, staying with their mother just 3-5 days before weaning.

Our hooded seal appears to be a juvenile in the process of exchanging his baby coat for his mature coat. Please note! This small seal toy is made of solid plastic and does not actually float in water. We think he'd make a wonderful addition to your sea-life diorama or school project. He can also be used as a toy or added to your animal collection. Come look through our collection of seal toys and gifts.
