The blue starfish (Linckia laevigata) is a common shallow water starfish. It is found mainly on reefs in the Pacific. It is gets its blue color from a blue pigment called linckiacyanin and some accessory yellow carotenoids.The blue starfish is a nocturnal scavenger and feeds primarily on algae. It produces saponin which is a chemical defense against predatory fish.
