It is made of solid, flexible plastic and is 1/2 inch thick. It has a detailed underside and a rough exoskeleton. Our replica bat star looks real but promises not to crawl away. This bat star model makes a nice pet, a gift, an educational toy or science class exhibit, or fits into a diorama for a school project. Check out our other starfish toys and gifts.

The bat star (Asterina miniata) comes in a large variety of colors ranging from red, orange, mottled brown, and dark green all the way to black. It can be found crawling along the bottom of the ocean on rocks in kelp forests. Bat stars have webbing between their short, triangular arms, which gives them a batlike look. Normally, bat stars have five arms, but they occasionally have as many as nine arms. At the end of each arm or ray, the bat star has sensors which detect food, light and movement. The bat star crawls over its prey and emits digestive juices which turn their prey into a soup. The bat star plays an important role in keeping the kelp forest floor clean from algae and dead animals.
