Our beautiful hand-carved black bear pen shows the American black bear (Ursus americanus ) up in a tree. It is the most common bear in North America and ranges from Canada through Central Mexico. It stands about 3 feet high and is about 6 feet in length. An adult has small eyes, rounded ears, a long snout, a large body, and a short tail. It has an excellent sense of smell. It generally has shaggy black hair, ranging in color from white through chocolate-brown, cinnamon-brown and blonde to black. The black bear has highly developed paws for scratching, digging and clawing. It is an omnivore and will eat an assortment of insects including bees, carrion, shoots, bark and roots. The habitat of black bears is under constant pressure with the encroachment of human activity. Since the black bear can damage young trees, it is considered a nuisance by timber companies. Organized bear hunting with dogs has imperiled the black bear. When sensing danger, the black bear will often climb a tree. Like any wild animal, its behavior is unpredictable. Campers must take great precaution to keep from attracting bears by sealing food stuff and disposing of garbage.
