Our gorgeous yellow long-horned cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) replica is made of solid vinyl plastic and measures 2 3/4 inches from the front "horns" to the rear fins. The cowfish is a member of the boxfish family. When seen from the top, the fish is almost square like a box (hence its name). Note the lifelike details and fine paint job. The plastic longhorned cowfish sits comfortably on its belly as seen in the photo. Made in China, the plastic fish is first sent to Germany and then imported to the US. It is hand-painted and is nicely detailed on both sides. This plastic box fish has, proportionally, the thickness of a real fish. It measures 1 1/4 inches across the width of its belly, and Its name is moulded into the bottom (it says "Box Fish" rather than Cowfish). Our cowfish replica is great for school diorama projects, classification projects, toys, novelties, animal collections, party favors, corporate events, and more. Our plastic fish does not float, and should NOT be put in your aquarium. However, you can make a superb coral reef shoebox diorama using this and other plastic aquatic creatures and mammals, sharks, fish, sea turtles, birds, and decor from our gift shop. Best of all, there is no mess, no feeding, and no tank cleaning :) Be sure to see our other plastic fish.

The long-horned cowfish is found in tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It may grow to a length of 20 inches in the wild, but usually only reaches two or three inches in aquariums. It has become very popular among people who keep saltwater fish tanks, although care must be taken since the cowfish along with other boxfishes secretes a toxin when frightened or traumatized that can kill not only the other fish in the tank, but itself as well. The cowfish has small fins that move quickly, allowing it to "hover" and change directions rapidly. It is solid with a bony covering, and unlike a puffer, does not expand or "blow up." Cowfish are related to boxfish, puffers, and trumpetfish. They expel jets of water through their small mouths into the sand to dislodge their invertebrate prey. Our plastic fish has this hard, round mouth as well, although it's just barely visible in the photo above.
