This engaging, realistic-looking plastic salmon replica is highly detailed and colorfully painted. It is soft and hollow, but does not squirt. The artist who designed this salmon seems to have incorporated a number of features of the different types of salmon into one attractive fish. The coloration indicates that our salmon in its spawning stage. It may be a King or Chinook male salmon but the artist has overlooked the necessity of including the typical hooked nose and straight tail. In any case, this salmon fits well as a table decoration, or for a school project. Check out our other salmon toys and gifts.

The word "salmon" is a general term referring to any number of fish in the Salmonidae family. Salmon are anadromous: they are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean, then return to fresh water to reproduce. Salmon live abundantly off the Pacific Northwest from California to Alaska, off the Atlantic Coast and in the Great Lakes. It is a highly sensitive fish and subject to enormous fishing pressure. Also it suffers greatly through destruction of spawning habitat as a result of irrigation, logging, and hydroelectric generation. The demand for fresh salmon has also greatly increased in the last several decades. Salmon farming has become a huge business and has offset some need for wild salmon. In 2008 there will be a moratorium on salmon fishing along the California and Central and Southern Oregon Coast in order to replenish the salmon run into the Sacramento River through San Francisco Bay.
