The rhinoceros (Rhinocerotidae) is considered the world's most endangered mammal. Due to habitat loss and poaching, the wild rhino population plummeted from 65,000 in 1970 to fewer than 5,000 by 1998. Poaching remains the rhino's greatest threat as cultures in India, China, and the Far East use the valuable horns for folk medicines and aphrodisiacs. Five species exist worldwide: In Africa, the Black and White rhinos and in Asia, the Sumatran, Indian, and Javan. Even though rhinos must still be rigorously protected, this species is actually a conservation success story. Protection by authorities and conservation organizations worldwide have allowed the numbers to increase to today's levels of just under 18,000. You can learn more about rhinoceros conservation efforts on the excellent International Rhino Foundation web site. (Rhino research by Joslyn Biggins.)
