The rhinoceros (Rhinocerotidae) is considered one of the world's most endangered mammal. Due to habitat loss and poaching, the wild rhino population has plummeted from 65,000 in 1970 to fewer than 2,500 by 1998. Poaching remains the rhino's greatest threat as cultures in India, China, and the Far East use the valuable horns for folk medicines and aphrodisiacs. Five species exist worldwide: In Africa the Black and White Rhino and in Asia the Sumatran, Indian, and Javan. (Rhino research by Joslyn Biggins.)
