Our Plastic Trap-Door Spider

This engaging, idealized plastic spider is made of hard durable plastic. It is 2 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide. Our spider resembles the trapdoor spider, due to its shape, hard shelled thorax, and distinct boxing glove-shaped palps, that is, the two "sensory feelers" at front of its head. I found an Asian variety which has yellow, green and dark purple coloration, like our example. Our trapdoor spider makes a good replica in a shoe box diorama or for any school project. It is also an excellent party favor. Check out our other spider toys and gifts.

About Trap-Door Spiders

The trapdoor spider belongs to the family Ctenizidae. These are spiders that burrow and construct a trapdoor of silk, vegetable matter and soil. These relatively harmless spiders are found in numerous places in the world, especially in rainforests and warmer climates. The trapdoor is difficult to see. The spider holds it partially open, especially at night, and waits for unsuspecting prey to pass near its burrow. The trapdoor spider has an uncanny sense of movement. When movement is sensed, the spider then captures the prey in its tarsi or claws, which are at the ends of its fangs.
