Our plastic toy spitting cobra measures 2 1/2 inches from his nose horizontally back to the end of his tail. From the top of his head to where the coils sit on a flat surface is 1 1/2 inches. The color is a reddish brown. The snake has an orange throat with a black band. Be sure to see our other cool cobra toys and gifts.

The so-called "spitting" cobras are a group of snakes that spray (rather than actually spitting) their venom up to about six feet. They can also inject venom with their fangs. When sprayed, the the venom does not damage healthy skin, but can cause blindness if it touches the victim's eye and is not washed out right away. Venom can also enter the body through wounds in the skin. If death occurs, it is due to suffocation. The venom causes the diaphragm to become paralyzed. Bite or spray victims are treated with antivenom, and if needed, breathing can be supported via mechanical means (such as ventilators used in hospitals) until the toxins are dissipated. In humans, death occurs between about 6 and 12 hours after intrusion of the venom. There are numerous species of cobra inhabiting tropical and desert regions of Asia and Africa. The cobra's hood is actually an expansion of the rib cage below the head. Cobras are the world's longest venomous snakes, some species reaching a little over 17 feet.
