About Soft-shelled Turtles

The soft-shelled turtle is a general term referring to a number of different freshwater turtles found throughout the world. It distinguishes itself from other turtles by its soft shell without scutes. The carapace is pliant especially at the edges, but does have solid bone behind it in the center. The light and flexible shell of these turtles allows it to move more easily in open water, or in muddy lake bottoms. Soft-shelled turtles need to be submerged in order to eat. They feed on other small aquatic animals such as fish, clams, little crabs and snails. They generally have a long neck and have a helpless expression. Actually behind the soft-shelled turtle's lips are strong jaws used for crushing and biting.
