Kangaroo rats (genus Dipodomys) live only in the warm, dry areas of the western and southwestern United States. They are so called because they hop on their long back legs similar to the way a kangaroo moves. Many of the 22 species live in California. Kangaroo rats are especially well adapted for dry climates, as they can process water from dry seeds using a metabolic process called oxidative phosphorylation.
