About White Rats

The white rat is actually an albino rat which is commonly known as a PEW, or a pink-eyed white. These rats originated in England as a mutation at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and were bred primarily for show. A quality white rat has perfectly pink eyes and totally white fur without any yellowish tinge. These domestically-raised rats are as clean and safe as any other domesticated pet. They don't carry any more disease than any other domesticated pet, and they can be tamed to be friendly. There is a rat-fanciers' organization called AFRMA which sets the standards for what constitutes a quality white rat and, sets breeding standards. White rats are related to brown rats and common sewer rats. Actually most rat species are not city-dwellers, but live in the wild and are healthier there since food is more plentiful.
