Like real tapirs, this plastic version has four toes on each front foot and four three on each back foot. Our realistic-looking asian tapir is made of hollow plastic and measures 4 1/2 inches from nose to tail and stands 2 1/2 high. The body is moulded with a fur-like pattern and details that almost make it seem real. Its name is moulded into the underside. It comes in blue and a rarer gray. Because the gray is harder to get, it is a little more expensive. This sturdy, light-weight plastic tapir is great for school projects, toys, novelties, animal collections, party favors and more. You can make a terrific Asian rainforest shoebox diorama using this and other plastic animals from our gift shop. Best of all, there is no mess, no feeding, and no tank or cage cleaning :) Come look through our entire collection of plastic tapirs.
Our Canadian tapir fan friends, Mark and Carol Reid, gave Perseus his beautiful name. The reason, they said, is that tapirs are perissodactyls (odd-toed ungulates, or hoofed animals). If you like, you can call him "Percy" for short, but we like the long version.
In Greek mythology, according to the National Textbook Company's Classical Dictionary, Perseus "was the famed and powerful son of Zeus and Danae. He rescued Andromeda (who was chained to a rock) and married her, as well as enacting a number of other impressive feats, usually involving the slaying of an evil or important character, such as the Gorgon Medusa or the sea-monster that would have devoured the captive Andromeda."
