Foot of a lowland tapir in Brazil

Patr̀cia Medici examines the right forefoot of a male lowland tapir, "Marinho," captured for ratio-collaring during July, 2000. The tapirs on this page were all captured inside Morro do Diabo State Park, Parana State, Brazil, using pitfall traps. The tapirs have been anesthetized for examinations and collaring. They are awakened and released within a few minutes, so work must be done quickly. Thanks to the loan of a digital camera from Laury Cullen, Pati was able to send us these excellent photos the day after she returned from the field.

The two photos above show the feet of another young male, "Joao."

There were three male tapirs caught this round and one female. The field team named the female tapir "Patr̀cia" after the project's Principal. "Patr̀cia's" feet are shown in these two pictures. For a comparison of the foot on the left with the feet of other tapir species, see this page.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
