Buffon's "Le Tapir"

Buffon print of lowland tapir, c. 1775

I did not have the original book this engraving came from, but the person I bought it from gave the following information. The print is c. 1775, from a book by George Louis Leclerc Buffon, whose engravings date from 1766-1799. The work from which this came is entitled Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere du Cabinet Roi - Collection de planches d'histoire naturelle enluminees,. This work, although French in origin, was published in Amsterdam, and the subtitle located on the print is in French. The paper is high quality - chain-linked, laid, and watermarked. The hand-coloring is original to the time period of publication. Size: 7 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
