Lowland tapir at the Medellin Zoo

Photo © 2003 Carolina Villegas and Liliana Gallego
Carolina Villegas and Liliana Gallego, Colombian photographers working at the Medellin Zoo, sent this gorgeous photo of a lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) to Patricia Medici for use on the Tapir Gallery site. Patricia said, "I think it's one of the most beautiful lowland tapir pictures I've ever seen. I love B&W pictures." Truly, the photo brings out the stunning lines and sculptured planes of this unique face. For me, it also captures an attitude I feel about the species. They sometimes look as if they're connecting to something beyond my ability to comprehend. There is a mystery and fascination held in this tapir's eye, and a readiness of its mouth to "say" something profound.
All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
