Walking and chewing

Photo by Sheryl Todd, about 1969
This is Stanley at about a year and a half old. He had probably gained most of his height, but wasn't as bulky as an older tapir. He came towards me because he heard me coming into his yard, but he was still chewing on something - a piece of hay or maybe some horse feed. This picture goes to prove that tapirs can walk and chew at the same time, making them more coordinated than some U.S. Presidents. I only regret that I didn't have a better camera when we had the tapirs. I have very few pictures of him, and most are not very good.
The light spot right between his ears was undoubtedly where he had scratched off some hair by knocking his head against something. It was a regular occurrence, but since tapirs have such thick skin, it rarely drew any blood, and the hair would soon grow back.
All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
