Many thanks to Roxane Losey (tapir keeper) for taking these photos and to the Los Angeles Zoo for letting us use them. These photos are of a 5 day old male mountain tapir born on October 10, 2003, at the Los Angeles Zoo. Click on the bottom photo to enlarge it. Midori is a proficient and experienced parent, having previously given birth. There are only 8 of these rare animals in captivity worldwide. The mother's name is Midori and the father's name is Emitt. Baby mountain tapirs not only have longer hair than other species, but they also have more white markings on the face.
All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
