Lowland tapirs
at the Chester Zoo

Tapir photo by John Burke

John Burke of Blackpool, England, has generously lent us this photo of lowland tapirs in the Chester Zoo, Chester, England. The baby may be about six months old, and is just beginning to grow out of his stripe-and-spot "watermelon" coat. The markings are less prominent on his face, neck and upper body than they would have been at birth.

John Burke has some fascinating pages on the Web himself, showing other animal photos he's taken, along with such interesting subjects (and photos) as England's stone circles, juke boxes, pinballs and English curiosities. Highly recommended! Also see John's capybara photo in the Tapir Gallery. (It's the second photo on the page.)

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
