An Asian tapir strides across its compound
in the Bangkok Zoo, Thailand

Tapir photo © Stefan Schröder, October 3, 1996

In 1996, Stefan Schröder of Germany took this photo in the Bangkok Zoo in Thailand. He says, "There were also two other tapirs in the same cage, but unfortunately they were sleeping all the time." The Malayan tapir is native to Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia, while three New World species live in Mexico, Central and South America.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
